Let fruit be on the tree
Palisade is renowned for its ability to grow some of North America’s best fruit including peaches, cherries, apricots, cherries, pears, plums, apples and several wine grape varieties. While we know a plump peach hanging within reach is tantalizing, our orchard and vineyard owners ask that you resist the fruity temptation and please leave fruit on the branch and vine. Let the experts handle the picking and visit one of our many fruit stands or wineries for fruit samples. If you’re keen on doing your own picking, head to one of Palisade’s u-pick orchards. Just be sure to call ahead and check in with the fruit grower who will give you the skinny on which trees and varieties are ready for harvesting.
STEER CLEAR OF PRIVATE PROPERTY
Respect private gates and signs in fruit & wine country
Fruit growers and winemakers will happily serve you with a grin at the market stand and in the wine tasting room, but their friendly vibes might turn sour if they catch you tip-toeing through their fields or rolling down their private roads. It turns out grape pests hitch a ride on uninvited wanderers, spreading disease from one vineyard to another, so there is real reason for concern. Please steer towards the warm welcome signs and keep your eyes peeled for gates and private property and private road signs when traveling through our fruit and wine country.
PEDAL PROPER
Keep it upright and let the good times roll
It’s a blast to experience the beautiful orchards, lavender fields, world-class vineyards, premium wineries, fresh farm market fruit stands and historic downtown Palisade by bike. With no windshield to hinder your view, prepare to be blown away by the beauty of the blossoms and Bookcliffs. When pedaling the Fruit and Wine Byway and our gravel routes, hug the right side of the road and make sure you are visible to cars. Safety first, folks! If you are gearing up to taste it all, consider leaving the bike behind and opting for a designated driver or enlisting one of our local tour companies.
Slow Down & Enjoy
Wave, it's what we do here
While some Colorado speed limits top 75 mph, out here, things move at a slower pace. When cruising through Palisade, the speed limit is 25 mph or below, giving you more time to enjoy the beautiful views and master the art of the Mesa County greeting - just unpeel the index finger off the steering wheel and give a gentle nod. Don’t forget to yield (and wave) to cyclists and pedestrians, too. During festivals and events, when the town is hopping, we encourage you to polish your patience, find a designated parking spot, and explore Palisade by foot. Trust us, it's the perfect way to soak in the vibrant atmosphere and uncover the hidden culinary and retail treasures nestled in our downtown area.
Tame the Toast
Drink in all Palisade has to offer in a chill manner
Palisade locals know how to have a good time, and we're thrilled to be the hosts of your party! We love it that besties meet up in our town for wine-fueled getaways and special celebrations. At the same time, we deeply value visitors who embrace and respect our serene small-town atmosphere, ensuring their exuberance remains well-balanced and controlled when out and about in town. Cheers to drinking in all that Palisade has to offer, while maintaining a relaxed and laid-back vibe.
Water up!
It’s high and dry here, so stay hydrated
In these parts, where the sun shines and humidity runs low, it's important to prioritize hydration if you want to keep the fun meter pegged. Palisade sits at an elevation of just over 4,700 feet and averages over 90 degrees in the summertime. Be sure to pack plenty of water for your outings whether you're visiting orchards and vineyards, logging miles on the trails and roads, or floating the Colorado River. And just when you think you've packed enough water, think again and pack some more! As a basic rule of thumb, aim for a gallon of water per person per day. The reusable water bottle is an indispensable Colorado accessory (the more stickers adorning it, the better), so keep one close at hand and sip from it regularly.
